WBC Heavyweight Champ Vitali Klitschko was suppose to face former WBA title holder Nikolai Valuev, but after long negotiations an agreement could not be reached. Klitscho needs an opponent for a May 29th bout. . European Champion Albert Sosnowski of Poland will step up to the plate and face the WBC champ in Germany. Sosnowski is 45-2-1 with 27 of his wins by Knock Out. Sosnowski wants to accomplish what famed Polish heavyweight Andrew Golota never could and that is capture a major boxing title.  Since the Lennox Lewis retired from boxing in 2004, no one has been able to solve the Klitschko riddle.  Sosnowski has a good a chance as anyone in boxing’s heavyweight division.  His record is impressive, but the question would be how many of his 48 fight was against top boxing talent and how prepared is Sosnowski to make the step up in the elite class in the boxing world.

ESPN is reporting that the 2010 USA Boxing National Championships will be returning to Colorado Springs, CO after spending a year in Denver. The Olympic style tournament will take place on July 12th through July 17th and will feature more than 200 boxers in both the male and female divisions. Why the female divisions? The International Olympic Committee decided the female fighters just last year to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Maybe USA boxing fans will be lucky enough to get some contenders out of this batch of Olympic boxers.  The sport is hurting for some talent that can carry the sport in the states and compete with MMA.

For some odd reason, Floyd Mayweather has not signed the contract to face Welterweight Champ Shane Mosley on May 1st at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley is now signed and official. Look for the media blitz to start at this weekend’s Super Bowl between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.

But I will say it again…does anyone really care?

I don’t know why anyone would care about this bout.  That being said…outside of Manny Pacquiao, Mosley may actually prove a threat to Mayweather.

This just hit. Jermaine Taylor will NOT continue with the Super 6 Tournament on Showtime. Taylor was scheduled to face Andre Ward in the 2nd stage of the 1st round of the Super 6 Tournament. But Taylor fought twice in 2009 and both bouts ended in the final seconds of the fights with Taylor being Knocked out by Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham. We will have to wait for comments from Showtime and Andre Ward about the withdrawal of Taylor from the tournament. I would guess that they will wish him the best.

I hope that Jermaine Taylor will be able to return to the sport.  Whether he is fighting, training other fighters or commentating for Showtime or the other companies that cover the sport of boxing.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather negotiations go to mediation. Retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein will oversee the mediation in hope for the 2 side to resolve their issues and get this bout signed.

This is the bout that could save boxing in the short term.  Much talk has been made about replacement opponents for both Mayweather and Pacquaio, but I don’t think anyone will care.  This is the fight that everyone wants to see.  The heavyweight division has moved to Europe and until the USA can find a competitive heavyweight boxing that can beat one of the Klitchkos, no one in the states is going to care about the heavyweight division anytime soon.

The only other boxing matches I care about is the Super Six Tournament on Showtime.  The next set of bouts for the Super Six Tourney will start in March.

Let’s hope the ISSUES between Mayweather and Pacquiao can be resolved and the fight signed.  The world wants to see that bout…make the bout happen.

Former Multi-time Heavyweight Boxing Champ Evander Holyfield to face Francois Botha for WBF Title. Why?  This is one of those fights that I really don’t want to see.  In regard to Holyfield, him continuing to compete at any level shows the inherent problems with how boxers are compensated and how successful boxers are used.  Is Holyfield really fighting for the competition, or is he fighting because he is broke and has a bunch of mouths to feed?

Before Holyfield gets seriously hurt in the ring, I think he needs to find some other way to make his money.  I don’t want to see this guy die in the ring.  There has been some talk of starting a fighters union for MMA.  Not sure how it would work.  Might need to be something along the lines of how the players associations for Baseball and Football are run, but if a union can help these fighters maintain their funds after their fighting days are done…might be worth looking into.

The soap opera that is Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather has gone to another level of silliness.  While there will be a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather, the fight will not be between Manny and Floyd.  The fight will take place in a court room and will be between lawyers employed by Top Rank Boxing and Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Sr. Do not be surprised if lawyers for Golden Boy Promotions get involved as well.

The problems started when the dispute went public that Pacquiao was having some issue with fighter testing to make sure that everything is fair.  Pacquiao agreed to the blood testing just not the method insisted on by the Mayweather camp.  Once the Pacquiao issue hit the airwaves and the blogisphere, so did Mayweather Sr. accusing Pacquiao of using performance enhancing drugs.  Pacquaio tried to shrug off the allegations attributing to pre-fight hype, but Pacquiao feels the both Mayweather Jr. and Sr. have gone to far and has instructed his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, to help in filing the case against the Mayweathers.

I have to say, it is pretty messed up to accuse people of steroid use with no proof.

Top Rank…Golden Boy Promotions, please find a way to make this fight happen.  No one cares about any other opponent for these guys, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., to fight.  This is the fight that fans want to see.  MAKE…IT…HAPPEN!!!

The Mayweather/Pacquiao fight is not a done deal yet, but the deal is very close to being done. One of the biggest points of contention is where the bout will take place. A report posted on ESPN.com is saying that the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is the most likely spot for the bout. Let’s be honest, Las Vegas is the best place to hold a bout of this type. They have the infrastructure to handle all aspects. I like it.

Pound for pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao is branching out. He is staring in a film in the Philippines. Wapakman. Check out the trailer.

tua

Due to family matters, WBO #3 ranked heavyweight David Tua had to pull out of his proposed February 6th bout in Atlantic City, NJ. Tua holds wins over Michael Moorer, Hasim Rahman, John Ruiz and Oleg Maskaev over a 17 year career. Tua was to defend his Asia Pacific and Oriental titles.

Lawmakers are appealing to President Obama to pardon Boxing Champion Jack Johnson of his imprisonment over a century ago because of a romantic link to a white woman. Senator John McCain of Arizona and Rep. Peter King of New York are leading the charge to get a posthumos pardon for Jackson. This new attempt is in response to the Justice Department pardon attorney, Ronald L. Rodgers, stating that as a policy the department does not pardon dead people.
I think Jack Johnson deserves a pardon. Do you?

Is James Lights Out Toney headed to the cage? Check this article out.  Toney would be a great addition to the MMA ranks.  If the guy could learn a bit of the ground game, the guy would be incredibly dangerous to any that he faced.

vitali

Vitali Klitschko won a unanimous decision win over the Kevin Johnson. Does anyone really care?

Jermaine Taylor’s promoter, Lou DiBella, has left Jermaine Taylor behind after it was announced that Taylor would be continuing in the Super Six Tournament on Showtime. Taylor’s next fight will be in April against the newly crowned WBA Super Middleweight Champ Andre Ward. DiBella sites his concern for Taylor’s health and well being. Taylor might want to listen to his now former promoter.

There is a heavyweight title match up this weekend. American Kevin Johnson vs. Vitali Klitschko. Johnson is vowing to bring the Heavyweight Title back to the states.

The man who recently stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round, IBO Cruiserweight Champion Danny Green, made a call to Bernard Hopkins and left a message to issue a challenge to a fight since the possibility of a bout between Hopkins and Jones was crushed when Green put Jones on the canvas.
