Meet John Devine. He is the Cage Combat Fighting Championship’s Heavyweight Champion. Devine will be making his Strikeforce debut on March 26th, 2010 at Strikeforce Challengers 7 in Fresno, CA.

One of the things that I want to do with This Week in Combat Sports is feature the unknown up and coming fighter. In July of 2009 leading up to the Cage Combat Fighting Championship ‘Rush’ event, I had the chance to talk with on of the fighters on the card Evan Esquerra. Here is his story of why he got into the fighting sports and a bit about bout that the interview preceded.

On Saturday December 19th, I was at the Strikeforce press conference where Dan Henderson and KJ Noons were officially introduced as Strikeforce fighters. Henderson answered questions during the press conference that covered so many questions that I wanted to ask and our time was limited to do one-on-one interviews, I decided to go right to my Why I am a Fighter questions. Here is Dan Henderson….Why I am a Fighter…

At the Strikeforce: Evolution weigh-ins December 18th, I got the chance to talk to Jason Mayhem Miller. The dude is a blast to interview. We talked about his attempt and success competing at G4′s American Ninja Warrior, but not able to advance in the competition. Turns out he did that show before the fight with Jake Shields. He let’s his feelings be know on how he feels about Jake Shields. Gives his picks on the main card fights and other insanity.

This is a new segment called Why I am a Fighter. I was lucky enough to get one of the top lightweights in MMA to be my first of this ongoing segment. The Strikeforce Interim Lightweight Champion, Gilbert ‘El Nino’ Melendez, explains why he has chosen to be a fighter, how he started and who influenced him among other things.

Here it is:
