Interview with Strikeforce Lightweight Champ Gilbert ‘El Nino’ Melendez

Gilbert Melendez will face Shinya Aoki for the SF Lightweight Strap on April 17th.

Can I just say this about Gilbert Melendez? He is a great guy to interview. I had my little girl running around the house while I was on the phone with Melendez and he was cool with the little interruptions that comes with having a young child in the house. Again, really cool and if you watch both parts of the interview, you will get some great news in regard to El Nino.

Now on to the interview:

In part 1 of the interview with the Strikeforce Lightweight Champ, I asked him about where the name El Nino came from, how his training is going and if there is a difference between Gilbert Melendez the coach and Gilbert Melendez the fighter…

In part 2, we get into his upcoming bout with Shinya Aoki, what will need to happen if a rematch is to happen in Japan and his contract status with Strikeforce…

I would like to thank Gilbert ‘El Nino’ Melendez, again, for taking the time out of his day to talk with me.

Strikeforce Finally Announced April 17th Card

April CBS card confirmed. What else do you have for me, Strikeforce?

Strikeforce finally announced its next CBS event. The day will be April 17th. The place is Nashville, TN. Headlining the event on April 7th will be Jake Shields defending his Middleweight title against the ever dangerous and Pride’s 2 division champion, Dan Henderson. Also on the card will be the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Gegard Mousasi taking on Muhammad ‘King Mo’ Lawal. And to round out the championship bouts for April 17th, Lightweight champ Gilbert ‘El Nino’ Melendez will put his title on the line against DREAM’s Lightweight champ Shinya Aoki. Aoki’s title will not be on the line in this bout. A champion vs champion bout with both titles on the line would have been awesome, but since Marius Zaromskis was not asked to put up his DREAM Welterweight title against Nick Diaz with the Strikeforce Welterweight title on the line as well, I can understand why the DREAM belt is not on the line.

Three championship bouts ready for April 17th in Nashville, TN, but what about the rest of the card and what about future Strikeforce cards?

No other bouts were announced, but the speculation is that Herschal Walker is being looked to as a possible viewer savior for CBS and Strikeforce. No one has yet come up with any possible opponent outside of Jose Canseco and please do not let Strikeforce bring in Canseco to face Walker. No one wants to see that fight and no one cares about that fight.

With Walker being the 4th fight on the card, who would be involved in the 5th bout of the card. I feel that Strikeforce needs to start building fighters on the big show. Luke Rockhold had about 2 minutes of work on the Feb 26th and is an exciting fighter to watch. The rematch between Trevor Prangley and Karl Amoussou from Feb 26th would be a good promotable fight as well.

So, what is my point? I think Strikeforce needs to start planning ahead. Have 3 or 4 cards in the works that the public are aware of. I would like to see a plan. A plan that would lead to better and better fights and cards and show fans, media and other fighters that Strikeforce has a plan for the future. I think because Strikeforce for the longest time didn’t have to deal with monthly events. I want to see a plan from Scott Coker and his crew. How we will see the plan is to start talking about the May, June, July and August cards now. Not waiting till 6 weeks out to officially announce the next card. Sign some fights a few months out. In a conversation I had with a fighter that will be appearing on the March 26th Strikeforce Challengers card in Fresno, CA, he did not know who his opponent was yet. 4 weeks out from a scheduled bout with no idea who the opponent is. Strikeforce may already be planning ahead, but doesn’t appear that way to me.

Please, Strikeforce, start planning ahead and the craziness that you are going through with a certain heavyweight might not have happened…but then again, probably would have happened anyway. There may be many reason for the holdout, but who knows. The further ahead you plan the more you can build other fighters. The more you can introduce the DREAM fighters to the american audience. The more fans you can bring to Showtime and CBS in the future.

And, hey, Strikeforce, if you need help, drop me a line. I have a lot of ideas for you.

Now, in defense of Strikeforce planning ahead. An event in May seems to be in the works which will feature some of the top heavyweights in the world. Strikeforce Heavyweight Champ Alistair Overeem will finally make his way into a Strikeforce cage for the first time in 2 years to face Brett Rogers. The word is the title will not be on the line. Makes me a bit mad, but hey, Overeem will finally fight in Strikeforce…we hope. The other bout in the works and confirmed by the fighters is the return of Andrei Arolovski facing Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva. Arlovski finally has a home after being in limbo for the last 9 months after losing to Brett Rogers in June of 2009. The Pit Bull signed a 16 month multi-fight deal.

I would like to see more forethought from Strikeforce. I would like to see rumors released about a June card and maybe even a July card.

Just what I would like to see.

Bellator to Hold Open Tryouts

Bellator Fighting Championships has just announced that the MMA promotion will be holding open tryouts in the Kansas City area. Fighters looking to tryout for Bellator must have at least 2 professional bouts, Federal I.D. and must bring own protective gear to the tryout. Here is the press release:

KANSAS CITY (March 1, 2010) – Bellator Fighting Championships, Everlast and The Kansas City Power & Light District announced today that they are sponsoring an open tryout that will provide a once-in-a-lifetime chance for undiscovered fighters to earn a spot in one of the promotion’s upcoming nationally televised Season 2 events.

The winner will participate in a featured fight during Bellator’s April 29^th event at the Power & Light District, a state-of-the-art, open-air, mixed-use entertainment venue at the center of downtown Kansas City owned and operated by The Cordish Company. The event, like all of Bellator’s Season 2 and 3 events, will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net and during special highlight shows on NBC and Telemundo.

The tryouts–which are presented in partnership with Everlast–will take place on Saturday, March 6th at Ringside, Inc.’s John Brown Training Center in Lenexa, Kansas. Members of the media are cordially invited to attend. Fighter registration begins at 12 noon with tryouts starting at 1 p.m.

“In the spirit of Rocky Balboa, this tryout will give an undiscovered up-and-coming fighter the chance of a lifetime to be highlighted on a national stage,” said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “We look forward to seeing a solid pool of fighters who are looking for their shot to compete at a world-class level.”

Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters with valid Federal ID cards are encouraged to sign up. The open tryouts will be held in a cage and will include grappling and bag-striking. Competitors will be judged by Bellator Fighting Championships executives and officials. To participate, fighters must provide proof of at least two professional fights. Participants are expected to bring their Federal I.D. and their own protective gear.

The April 29^th event is one of four that Bellator will be staging at the highly popular Kansas City Power & Light District. The Power & Light District encompasses multiple square blocks in the heart of Kansas City’s downtown area and features an exciting blend of restaurants, nightlife, and shopping, welcoming in excess of 6 million visitors annually.

“This tryout is the kickoff event for a spring and summer of excitement the likes of which Kansas City hasn’t seen before,” said Nick Benjamin, executive director of the Power & Light District. “It’s a great opportunity for a local talent to make his name in front of thousands of his fellow Kansas Citians in Kansas City Live!1—and the millions who’ll be watching on national TV—during the first main event on April 29.”

Fedor/Werdum Could be Absent From May Strikeforce Card

What is the real reason Fedor is holding out?

While fans clamor at the bit to watch the world’s No. 1 ranked heavyweight fight once again, they may just have to wait a little longer. As posted on MMA news site, Sherdog.com, Fedor could be absent from the Strikeforce May card while M-1 attempts to re-negotiate his current deal. As posted on Sherdog:

Fedor Emelianenko, the world’s No. 1-ranked heavyweight, will not appear on the April card. Emelianenko’s proposed bout with Fabricio Werdum has been pushed to May. However, multiple sources are indicating that the stoic Russian could be absent from both events as his management attempts to re-tool terms of Emelianenko’s existing contract with Strikeforce.

While the bout featuring two Top 10 heavyweights was being looked out for the April 17th CBS card, the fight was pushed back to an unanounced May card. Rumors now have it that the bout could even be in jeapordy for that card as well. Where does this leaves the fans? With some serious questions that probably won’t be answered if these rumors turn out to be in fact true. After the fall of Affliction, Fedor Emelianenko signed a three-fight deal with the California based MMA promotion, and is currently one fight into said deal.

Among the current rumors about Fedor’s proposed May fight with Werdum, Apy Echtfeld of M-1 Global, the company that manages Fedor, told Mixfight.nl, that Fedor would only fight Alistair Overeem, the current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, if Overeem would pass a 3rd-Party administered drug test prior to the fight, shades of Mayweather/Pac-Man from not too long ago. While many fans have wondered about Overeem’s ability to pass a drug screening, if a fight with Fedor is to occur, he would have to give into the demands and show people he is in fact clean, although Overeem has never failed a drug test before, although it must be stated that Japan does not in fact drug test.
