UFC on Versus 2 Live Results and Play-By-Play

Rob Kimmons vs. Steve Steinbeiss
Round 1

Steinbeiss opens up the bout with a left hand. Kimmons goes for the clinch and overpowers his opponent, pushing him into fence. Steinbeiss retaliates by throwing knees to Kimmons’ thighs. Kimmons circles away and attempts a double leg, however Steinbeiss stuffs the attempt and gets control of the clinch again. With Kimmons pushed into the cage, Steinbeiss lands shots to the body and legs. Kimmons manages to push Steibeiss away and after a few moments the fight find its way back to the clinch with the fighters trading spots against the cage to end the round.

Round 2

Kimmons immediately starts the round with a takedown attempt. He manages to take Steinbeiss down, however the Steinbeiss manages to work his way out, stands and pushes Kimmons into the fence. Kimmons is able to regain the clinch position, forcing Steinbeiss against the fence. Kimmons gets another takedown and attempts an armbar. Steinbeiss is able to fight out of the submission attempt, and gets to his feet. On the feet Steinbeiss is starting to throw successful combinations. Kimmons again initiates the clinch and scores a takedown, slamming his opponent. Steinbeiss is forced to fight off his back for the last 60 seconds of the round.

Round 3

The third frame opens with Steinbeiss launching a jab-uppercut combination that finds the mark, and lands a kick to Kimmons. Briefly in trouble, Kimmons clinches and is forced to the ground as Steinbeiss jumps for a flying triangle. Kimmons is able to capitalize on the failed attempt and tries for a guillotine. However Steinbeiss defends and finds his way. Back to his feet. Kimmons executes another takedown and looks to work from half guard. With 60 seconds remaining in the contest Kimmons is working some short elbows to the face of Steinbeiss. Steinbeiss finds his way to his feet with 15 seconds left but drops to a knee after taking one. The round and fight ends.

Official scores: Referees score the bout unanimously in favor of Kimmons, scoring the bout 29-28 across the board.

Darren Elkins vs. Charles Oliveira
Round 1

Elkins set the pace with a couple of missed combos. Elkins executes a double-leg takedown. Off his back, Oilveira attempts a triangle, then transitions to an armbar. He locks the move in, and Elkins falls to his back, allowing Oliveira to sink the move in further. Elkins is forced to tap at just 41 seconds into the first round.

Brian Stann vs. Mike Massenzio
Round 1

This fight marks John McCarthy’s official return to the UFC. Stann starts the action by going for a kick, which Massenzio counters by landing a takedown. Stann is able to get back to his feet but again is taken down off of a leg kick. Massenzio then goes to his back and works a guillotine attempt. Stann is locked in deep but isn’t in the full guard of Massenzio. Stann is able to get his head out and looks to work from top position. Stann raises up to throw punches. The two scramble, and Massenzio is able to take the back of Stann. The round expires with Massenzio in back mount.

Round 2

Massenzio begins the round by diving for the legs of Stann. He is able to get a takedown and passes to half guard, then works to get to side but cannot. Massenzio stands and grabs the head of Stann as he tries to stand. Massenzio attempts another guillotine, but Stann gets his head free. Stann reverses into top position, but Massenzio is able to position and remains in a position where he is able to minimize Stann’s punch attempts. Stann settles to pepper the body with punches and finishes the round on top position.

Round 3

Massenzio begins the round by again attempting the takedown, Stann is able to defend it. The two scramble, and Stann attempts a reverse triangle that Massenzio defends. The fight winds up back on the feet, where Stann lands several punches that rock Massenzio, however Massenzio is able to get a takedown. Massenzio is still rocked hurt but now is in top position. Stann attempts a triangle but Massenzio defends it. Massenzio stands and then again executes a takedown. Stann again looks for the triangle and this time it is there, and he clinches it deep. Massenzio tries to fight free, but cannot and is forced to tap at 3:10 of the final round.

James Irvin vs. Igor Pokrajac
Round 1

Pokrajac secures a takedown in the opening stages of the fight, however Irvin reverses the position to get on top. Irvin then loses position for a moment, which allows the fight to return to the feet. On the feet the two men throw bombs with Pokrajac getting the best of the exchange. Pokrajac gets a takedown off of a flurry and lands in side control. Irvin turns away and gives his back, and Pokarajac sinks in a rear-naked choke, which causes Irvin to tap out. The end comes at the 2:29 mark in the first round.

Matt Riddle vs. DeMarques Johnson
Round 1

Early stages of the fight, Johnson paws the jab and catches Riddle in the eye. After a very brief pause Riddle is ready to go. Johnson lands a right low kick to Riddle’s thigh. Riddle gets his first takedown of the contest and looks to work for full guard. Riddle throws several elbows that glance the face of Johnson. Riddle goes to pass, but Johnson gets back to his feet. Riddle bull rushes and gets the action back on the floor, then follows by throwing another successful elbow, then earns half guard. Johnson’s hips rise quickly for a submission attempt, but Riddle defends and lands strikes from the top position. The round concludes with Riddle in side control.

Round 2

Riddle begins the round by taking Johnson to the mat. Riddle postures, then lands several right hands. Riddle gets side control, then follows by digging a knee in to his opponent’s ribs. Johnson moves and gets back to half guard. Johnson is able to get to his base and stands, pushing Riddle into the fence. Johnson goes for a single leg, which Riddle blocks and the two scramble. Riddle is able to get on top of Johnson and take his back. Riddle stretches Johnson out and reigns down strikes to Johnson’s head. Referee Jason Herzog has seen enough and halts the fight at 4:29, awarding the TKO victory to Matthew Riddle.

Paul Kelly vs. Jacob Volkmann
Round 1

The two circle and neither seems willing to engage to start the fight. Finally, the former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher lands a kick to Kelly’s thigh. Volkman then shoots and gets his takedown at the midpoint of the round. He is able to pass Kelly’s guard and gets to half where he lands an elbow to the temple. Kelly briefly gets up, but the Volkmann immediately takes him back to the ground. Kelly gives his back, but Volkmann doesn’t sink in hooks. Volkmann takes mount and Kelly gives his back again. Volkmann removes his hooks and looks content to ride rather than work from back mount. A scramble ensues at the end of the round which sees Volkmann go for an armbar.

Round 2

A little more action begins Round 2, as Kelly attempts a kick on Volkmann; however Volkmann uses the kick attempt to successfully execute a takedown. Kelly gives his back and Volkmann goes back to the riding position. Kelly rolls to his back and Volkann gets the crucifix position. Kelly frees the isolated arm and gives his back again. Volkmann scrambles, gets an armbar but fails to finish. Kelly manages to gain top position. Volkmann now has to work from his back with Kelly trying to strike. Kelly stacks and then stands. With the space, Volkmann shoots a single and gets back on top. Volkmann passe the guard again and takes mount. Kelly gives his back and Volkmann decides to keep his hooks in. Kelly reverses and gets on top. The round expires with Kelly inside of Volkmann’s guard.

Round 3

The final frame opens with the fighters exchanging. Volkmann gets the better of the exchange, and finishes it off by shooting in and scoring another takedown. Volkmann has to fight off a guillotine attempt and does. In a quick scramble for position, Kelly manages to get on top, however Volkmann uses a half butterfly to negate any offense. With action stagnant, referee John McCarthy stands the men up. After the fight is stood up, the two circle, and Volkmann scores another double leg, and works from side control. Kelly fishes in a leg and gets to half which allows him to stand. With under 90 seconds remaining Kelly senses urgency and lands a hard jumping knee that catches Volkmann. Rocked, Volkmann immediately shoots for the takedown and successfully brings the fight back to the mat. He finishes the fight on top position.

Official scores: All three judges score the bout 30-27 for the winner, Jacob Volkmann

Tyson Griffin vs. Takinori Gomi
Round 1

Gomi begins by laning two body shots to Griffin. Both low in their stance. Griffin lands a shot to Gomi’s face. Gomi connects with a right hook to Griffin’s head, rocking him and knocking him down and out. Gomi follows up with several punches to a downed Griffin, before referee Jason Herzog to stop the fight at the 1:04 mark.

Referee stops the fight. Griffin is protesting the stoppage, however it seemed justified.

John Howard vs. Jake Ellenberger
Round 1

The two start the fights by exchanging, before Ellenberger presses Howard against the cage. He controls the position, landing several knees and punches on the cage. He then attempts a takedown, but Howard blocks it. Ellenberger gets him in the clinch and pushes it back against the cage. The crowd begins to get restless. He continues to throw knees to the body. After a minute of lack of action, the ref breaks. Howard throws two punches, Ellenberger clinches, then hits a takedown. Ellenberger controls in Howard’s full guard. Howard has his knee up, as Ellenberger tries to pass his guard. He continues to try and pass Howards guard. Herb Dean stands them. Ellenberger with jabs and a leg kick. Howard shoots, Ellenberger blocks it and puts Howard in the clinch, scoring another takedown. He throws several punches from side control, and follows up with elbows. Round ends with Ellenberger on top.

Round 2

Howard throws a headkick to start round 2. The two scramble, as Ellenberger is rocked. Ellenberger successfully attempts a takedown. He passes into Howard’s half guard, and throws elbows on top. Ellenberger posturing, then passes to full guard, and lands an elbow. Howard attempts an armbar, to no avail. Howard spins to his back, however Ellenberger gets him to his back again. Elllenberger smothering him. Howard grabs a leg and managed to get up. Howard tags him, and throws several big punches, rocking him with another left hook. Ellenberger, rocked again, but manages to take the fight back to the ground. Howard continuing to land punches to a downed Howard. Ellenberger attempting a triangle choke, Howard gets loose. Round ends with Ellenberger landing several punches to Howard.

Round 3

Howard’s eye is swollen as they begin Round 3. They exchange on the feet for a little bit as they both land a few strikes. Ellenberger lands a superman punch, while Howard follows it with a kick, not too much on it. Ellenberger gets the takedown and begins to throw some elbows and hammerfists. Ellenberger starting to throw more hammerfists as Howard is attempting to defend himself. Referee Herb Dean steps in to stop the fight and have Howard’s eye checked out. The Fight is stopped by the doctor, giving Ellenberger the TKO victory. The official time of the stoppage is 2:21.

Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami
Round 1

Round 1
Large feeling out process early to start. Okami taking the center and throwing his jab out, no landing it. Munoz throws a wild overhand. Feints from both guys as Munoz drops levels. Okami lands his jab and starts following it up with a left straight. Okami showing to be the much better striker, controlling the octagon. Okami waiting for the shot from Munoz, keeping his level low as he lands some more strikes. Finally Munoz shoots in for a takedown, Okami defending it well. They get back up, a few more from Okami as Munoz shoots again. Okami defends at first, but Munoz gets it with about 1:40 left. Okami gets back up in the clinch. Nothing much, several pot shots from both guys. Munoz attempts another takedown, that Okami defends.

Round 2

They start at, with a tiny feeling out process, as Munoz shoots. Okami showing a nice sprawl defends it. They go back to the feet after the failed takedown and Okami begins to take his shots, landing his jab and a low kick. Munoz circling, not wanting to exchange much with Okami. Okami gets the takedown on Munoz and ends up in his side control. A scramble ends with both back on their feet. Another takedown attempts by Munoz is stuffed by Okami. Okami is showing some great takedown defense here. Okami landing some hammerfists to the side of head of Munoz as he continues to hold onto the leg of Okami. Okami showing much a much improved sprawl from the Sonnen fight, defending well and landing several hammer fists. The round ends with Okami defending and landing what he can.

Round 3

Round 3 starts with Okami starting to push the pace of the fight. Really dominating the stand-up so far in this fight. Munoz looks like he wants nothing to do with it, but can’t take Okami down. 3:50 they open up a bit, Okami landing a few, but mostly wild punches up and they clinch against the cage. They release and Munoz dives for a leg. Okami defending it well, not giving up much in the wrestling department. Okami opening up some more, trying to land what he can, a jab and some lefts and rights. Munoz ducks under and attempts another takedown, but can’t get it. Another single leg attempt is stuff by Okami as he is defending them easily and is landing some shots on Munoz as he holds onto his leg.

Jon Jones vs. Vladmir Matyushenko
Round 1

Herb Dean is overseeing festivities. The two circle each other in the early stages. Vlad with a short set of jabs. Jones with an attempted jab to the body. Vlad throws another jab and hook. Jones with a leg kick. Jones with a spinning back kick to the body, then goes for and scores the takedown. Matyushenko looking for an armbar. He scores an underhook, but loses it. Jones then scores on top, and passes in to Matyushenko. Side control, then gets a crucifix. He begins to throw 10-12 unanswered elbows- punches that are landing cleanly. Herb Dean steps in and stops the fight. Jones with another dominant victory.
